A slow smile spread on my face. This was not a time to think but to act. I breathed a sigh of relief, stretched out on the hotel bed and slept almost immediately.
My phone rang incessantly. I woke up with a start and picked it up. I heard the panic stricken voice of my best friend's mother on the other end. "Please come here immediately, everything has gone out of hand, uncle and I have no clue what to do!!"
"What happened aunty?...Please dont panic..Don't worry I will be there within half hour"
Between sobs...she said, "Meenu's wedding got called off. The guests have already started arriving. We don't know what happened, the groom's parents are not willing to explain. All I know is that someone has told them something about meenu and they have believed it. Ravi is also not willing to talk."
"Aunty, don't worry, let me speak to Ravi. I will be there as soon as possible."
I called the reception for a cab, dressed hurriedly, and ran.
As I was sitting in the cab, I thought, oh my god!! it had actually worked! I could not believe it.
I called Ravi. He picked up the call after a good couple of rings.
"What happened Ravi? Why did you do this? What is wrong with you?" I bombarded him with a volley of questions.
"I don't want to hear a word in support of her. So unless you have something else to discuss, this conversation is over."
"Look Ravi, Meenu and I have been in school together right from the start till high school. I know her very well. If there is anybody who will support her, its me. You can't stop me from doing that. If you have a problem, tell me what it is and we can sort it out."
"So what if you have known her for so long, you have known me since childhood till today...don't you know I will not take a hasty decision? Its not just one instance but several. I'd rather not talk about it. So just let it go."
"But Ravi..." The phone line was cut...
My cab just turned into the premises of the wedding. As I got out of the cab, I heard a blood curdling scream. I looked up at the direction of the scream and saw meenu falling of the terrace and heard a thud as she hit the ground.
I woke up with a start. I was sweating as I turned to look at the unsent mail on my laptop screen. I cancelled the mail and deleted it from drafts. I breathed a sigh of relief as I got up to get ready for the wedding. As I got up I switched of the tv that was playing the end credits for the movie "My best friend's wedding".
